Veterans Likely On Their Way Out

Every offseason there are veteran players who are released, some come as more of a surprise than others. These players range from thirty-somethings to guys just a few years removed from getting drafted. Here are a handful of veterans I think are going to be let go at some point this offseason.

Isaiah Pead, RB, St. Louis Rams- Pead was drafted by the Rams in the second round of the 2012 draft and has failed to make a name for himself on the field. Zac Stacy and Tre Mason are the top two backs, and Benny Cunningham contributed enough on both offense and special teams last season to be third on the depth chart.
Benjarvus Green-Ellis, RB, Cincinnati Bengals- The man nicknamed The Law Firm has never been a game changing running back. He's the classic "three yards and a cloud of dust" type of back. He lacks breakaway speed, doesn't break many tackles, and doesn't have value as a receiver. Also, he doesn't contribute on special teams and he turns 29 in July. Gio Bernard and Jeremy Hill are the top two backs on this team, and behind them will be Cedric Peerman and Rex Burkhead.
Akeem Dent, LB, Atlanta Falcons- Drafted in the third round by the Falcons in 2011, Dent has failed to make an impact. This was never more evident than last season, when undrafted rookies Paul Worrilow and Joplo Bartu usurped Dent on the depth chart and produced for the defense when starting inside linebacker Sean Weatherspoon was placed on injured-reserve. With Weatherspoon, Worrilow, and Bartu set in stone and draft picks Yawin Smallwood and Marquis Spruill added to the mix, there's a slim chance Dent makes the roster.
Peyton Hillis, RB, New York Giants- The Giants signed free agent running back Rashad Jennings to be their starter, and then drafted the powerful Andre Williams in the fourth round this year. Throw 2012 first round pick David Wilson into the mix, and that leaves little room for Hillis.
Daniel Kilgore, C, San Francisco 49ers- The 49ers drafted Marcus Martin -- arguably the best center in this year's draft -- in the third round. That could certainly make Kilgore expendable, and due to this team's depth, moves like these aren't very difficult.
LaMichael James, RB, San Francisco 49ers- We know that Frank Gore, Marcus Lattimore, and Carlos Hyde are locks to make the roster. That leaves Kendall Hunter and LaMichael James competing for the final running back spot. They have similar skill sets, but Hunter has proven himself, while James has failed to make much of an impact on offense since being selected in the second round in 2012. I think James is on his way out.
Dawan Landry, SS, New York Jets- Landry is better suited as an in-the-box strong safety. The Jets used their first round pick to draft hard-hitting safety Calvin Pryor. In my eyes, that means they have their starting strong safety, making the 31-year-old Landry expendable.
Dan Connolly, G, New England Patriots- Almost three weeks ago, Patriots drafted three offensive lineman, all of whom display the ability to play guard. Connolly is over the hill and they could use an upgrade at right guard. I think Connolly will be cut in favor of a younger, more effective player.
Justin Blackmon, WR, Jacksonville Jaguars- It's not matter of if Blackmon will be released, but when. Okay, maybe that's a bit much, but you get the point. Drafted by the Jaguars in the first round in 2012, Blackmon can't stay out of trouble. Before he even suited up for his first NFL game, he was arrested for DUI. He was suspended for the first four games of 2013 for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy. Then, just two months into last season, Blackmon again violated the league's substance-abuse policy and was suspended indefinitely. According to The Associated Press' Mark Long, the Jaguars gave Blackmon's locker to undrafted rookie quarterback Stephen Morris.

Draft Report Card: NFC West

NFC West:

Arizona Cardinals- C+
I really liked the Cards' first two picks, safety Deone Bucannon and tight end Troy Niklas. Bucannon will pair with Tyrann Mathieu to form arguably the best young safety tandem in the league, while Niklas will step in and be their best tight end from day one. After those picks, I think the Cardinals' coaching staff and front office failed to address their needs, cornerback and linebacker in particular. John Abraham is 36 years old, and Daryl Washington could be facing another suspension. And behind Patrick Peterson, Antonio Cromartie, and Jerraud Powers their are no proven cornerbacks. If one of those three goes down with an injury, this secondary could be in trouble. Tyrann Mathieu's versatility comes in hand but he's relegated to playing in the slot, which is why I think they should have drafted a cornerback.

San Francisco 49ers- A+
I questioned the decision to take Jimmie Ward in the first round, but once I heard that he can play safety and cornerback it made more and more sense. Antoine Bethea will likely hold down the strong safety spot in 2014, and Ward will contribute at cornerback and on special teams. Jim Harbaugh and his staff were very active in the draft, making many trades and stocking draft picks. I particularly likes the selections of Carlos Hyde and Chris Borland. Hyde will compete with Marcus Lattimore for carries, keeping veteran Frank Gore fresh for the postseason. And Chris Borland might be labeled as "undersized" but the man can play football and after gruesome knee injury NaVorro Bowman suffered in the playoffs last season this was a much needed addition. Borland reminds me a lot of former Dolphins and Cowboys linebacker Zach Thomas. Marcus Martin will compete for the starting job at center and should save a roster spot due to his ability to play center and both guard positions. Bruce Ellington adds much needed talent and depth at wide receiver. And due to the depth this team has, Jim Harbaugh had the luxury of drafting a very talented player who suffered an unfortunate injury in the pre-draft process, Brandon Thomas, who will likely spend his rookie season on IR. The 49ers added a lot of good players and addressed all of their needs, a tremendous job by Harbaugh and General Manager Trent Baalke.

Seattle Seahawks- B
Pete Carroll and John Schneider addressed their team's needs, but I question the value of the players they selected. They drafted wide receiver Paul Richardson in the second round over Davante Adams, Allen Robinson, Jarvis Landry, Cody Latimer, and Donte Moncrief. And then later in the second round drafted offensive tackle Justin Britt, who more than likely would have been available with their next pick in the fourth round. The fourth round they got some pretty good players, Cassius Marsh has a nonstop motor and adds to their pass-rush, while they may have gotten the most athletic linebacker in the draft when they took Kevin Pierre-Louis. I was disappointed with Seattle's draft class this year as I felt they could have gotten better players with their picks.

St. Louis Rams- A-
General Manager Les Snead and head coach Jeff Fisher did a phenomenal job this year. They got impact players that will contribute immediately. Greg Robinson will start somewhere on the offensive line and do a great job, especially in the run game. Aaron Donald will start next to Michael Brockers on what is now hands down the most talented defensive line in the league. Lamarcus Joyner, one of the more underrated prospects in the draft, could end up starting at free safety, and his versatility will save the team a roster spot. Tre Mason will certainly steal some carries from Zac Stacy. Fourth round pick Mo Alexander is a big, hard hitting strong safety much like their current starter T.J. McDonald, and provides insurance should McDonald go down with an injury like he did last season. And, of course, I must mention their seventh round pick Michael Sam, the first openly gay player to get drafted. He's really going to have to make a name for himself and show that he can play special teams in order to have a shot at making the team. The decision not to draft a wide receiver tells me they're banking on their current group to make a significant leap in 2014.

Draft Report Card: NFC South

NFC South:

Atlanta Falcons- B
Jake Matthews is going to start his rookie season at right tackle, but eventually he'll be protecting Matt Ryan's blindside. Ra'Shede Hageman is the second coming of Richard Seymour. And after Steven Jackson's lackluster first season in Atlanta, the selection of Devonta Freeman brings much needed youth to the backfield. Atlanta addressed every need except for one: tight end. Who is going to replace Tony Gonzalez?

Carolina Panthers- C+
They selected wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin with their first round pick, but he doesn't come without several question marks. Is he a one year wonder? Does he have the motivation and dedication it takes to be a pro? That remains to be seen. I like that they are preparing for a possible life without Greg Hardy, drafting defensive end Kony Ealy in the second round. They still need help at offensive tackle and would have been wise to have double-dipped at wide receiver.

New Orleans Saints- B+
Brandin Cooks is going to make an instant impact and I think he'll quickly gain the trust of his quarterback, Drew Brees. Cornerback needed some young talent and they got just that with the selection of Stanley Jean-Baptiste, he converted from wide receiver to corner and is built like a safety. I thought they could have done better than Tavon Rooks when it came to drafting an offensive tackle, but besides that pick it was a good draft for New Orleans.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers- A-
After a very, very active free agency period for the Bucs, head coach Lovie Smith and the front office drafted all offensive players. It makes sense considering the offense was ranked towards the bottom of the league last season and the only noticeable need on defense is a starting outside linebacker, which I think free agent acquisition Dane Fletcher will end up cementing. Wide receiver Mike Evans was selected in the first round, pairing him with Vincent Jackson to give quarterback Josh McCown a receiving duo reminiscent of what he had last season with the Bears. Austin Seferian-Jenkins gives this offense yet another threat and automatically assumes the starting job. Charles Sims is an all purpose back who flew under the radar and will serve as a good complement to Doug Martin. I like what Tampa Bay did.

Best Undrafted Free Agents of 2014

Once the 256th pick was announced, I went to NFL.com to see which players went undrafted. Lo and behold, I find a slew of talented prospects that didn't hear their name called. These players usually don't get drafted due to an injury concern or off-field issues. Then there are the players who are worth a late round pick, but were viewed by coaching staffs as someone who won't get drafted and therefore wouldn't be worth using up a draft pick on.

Christian Jones, ILB, Florida St.- Jones started at linebacker for the Seminoles before being moved to defensive end as a senior in 2013. He will likely be tried at linebacker in Chicago, considering the lack of depth at the position. He might be more effective as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense where he can get after the quarterback.

Shayne Skov, ILB, Stanford- I don't understand how this guy went undrafted. He may not have good straight-line speed and or man-coverage skills, but he's aggressive, smart, instinctive, and a team leader. He signed with the 49ers and reunited with his former head coach Jim Harbaugh. Skov could benefit from his relationship with Harbaugh, but the team has solid depth at linebacker and he'll have to stand out to make that squad. Even if he doesn't, there's no doubt he's going to be on an NFL roster in 2014.

Jackson Jeffcoat, DE, Texas- I'm shocked Jeffcoat wasn't drafted. Sure, his durability is a concern and he doesn't have the bulk teams want in a defensive end, but his talent is undeniable. I thought he warranted a fifth round pick, but ultimately signed with the Seahawks as a free agent. Hopefully the coaching and training staff make him hit the weight room hard his rookie season and add more weight to his frame. He should contribute as a situational pass-rusher if he separates himself from the competition.

Antonio Richardson, OT, Tennessee- At 6'6" and 336-pounds, the man nicknamed "Tiny" is anything but. According to reports from several media outlets, the reason Richardson went undrafted was because the medical part of the pre-draft process discovered he had a micro fracture knee injury that might cause him to sit out his rookie season. He signed with the Vikings and could have a chance to compete for a job as a backup right tackle and/or guard this season or next season, depending on whether or not he's shelved on the injured reserve/physically unable to perform list.

Marcus Roberson, CB, Florida- Roberson struggled with injuries and had some off-field issues during his time at Florida, but he's a very talented player and I was surprised no team thought he was worth drafting. He signed with the Rams and considering their depth at cornerback is a bit thin, he could have a shot at cracking the final roster but will certainly have to prove himself on special teams.

Anthony Johnson, DT, LSU- Inconsistent. That word seems to be attached to Anthony Johnson. He shows great ability one game and then looks like crap in another. His college teammate and fellow defensive tackle Ego Ferguson was selected by the Bears in the second round. Johnson signed with Dolphins and has a tough hill to climb to make the final roster.

Craig Loston, SS, LSU- Another starter on the vaunted LSU Tigers' defense who I thought was a lock to get drafted. Loston isn't strong in coverage, but he's a very aggressive and hardnosed football player. The Jaguars signed him and he has a good shot of making the roster due to the lack of talent the team currently holds at the position.

Dion Bailey, SS, USC- Bailey is hurt by his lack of speed and tweener traits. He played both safety and linebacker at USC, but his skills don't translate to a specific position in the pros. He lacks the speed to play safety and isn't big enough to play linebacker. That doesn't mean he can't play, because this guy can play. He signed with the Seahawks and knowing Pete Carroll's eye for talent in defensive backs, I bet he likes Bailey's skill set. There's not much talent behind Pro Bowlers Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor on the depth chart, giving Bailey a prime opportunity to make the team.

Draft Report Card: NFC East

NFC East:

Dallas Cowboys- C
First round pick Zack Martin is their starting left guard and is going to help this offense tremendously. Jerry Jones traded up in the second round to draft defensive end Demarcus Lawrence, a fierce pass-rusher who put up big numbers at Boise State. Outside of those two picks, I feel could have done more with the picks they had.

New York Giants- B
Big Blue's brass capped off an active offseason with a so-so draft. The selection of Odell Beckham Jr. provides a much needed spark to the passing game. Weston Richburg will likely be the starting center for many years to come. And Andre Williams brings a bruising running style that the team hasn't had since Brandon Jacobs in his heyday. Eli Manning still needs a tight end to throw to, though.

Philadelphia Eagles- A-
Chip Kelly addressed all of his team's needs. Marcus Smith will compete with veteran Trent Cole for the starting right outside linebacker job, adding much needed pass-rushing skills to the position. Wide receivers Jordan Matthews and Josh Huff make up for the release of DeSean Jackson. And the secondary was addressed, adding safety Ed Reynolds and cornerback Jaylen Watkins, who also has experience at safety.

Washington- C+
Brian Orakpo got the franchise tag applied to him, meaning he could very well enter free agency next offseason and the team needs to be prepared, which they now are after selecting Trent Murphy. Third round pick Morgan Moses will likely have a shot at the starting right tackle job. Lache Seastrunk is reunited with college teammate RGIII and should be a good complement to Alfred Morris. Their weakest link (the secondary) was given just one new member and should have been of higher priority.

Draft Report Card: NFC North

NFC North:

Chicago Bears- B+
Charles Tillman can't play forever, which is why Kyle Fuller was selected with their first round pick. Chicago also had a huge void to fill at defensive tackle and drafted Ego Ferguson and Will Sutton in the second and third rounds, respectively. Every position of need was addressed. Ka'Deem Carey provides depth behind Matt Forte. I like what the Bears' coaching staff did

Detroit Lions- C+
The Lions needed help at cornerback prior to the draft, and drafted only one player at the position -- Nevin Lawson out of Utah State -- in the fourth round. I believe that had Justin Gilbert been available, they would have picked him rather than tight end Eric Ebron. I love the Kyle Van Noy selection in the second round, he'll be an impact player for them at outside linebacker. Their grade takes a big hit because of their failure to significantly improve the secondary.

Green Bay Packers- A+
Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy did a great job in this year's draft. Every need was addressed by adding quality players. Ha'Sean Clinton-Dix fell right in Green Bay's lap and now they have the rangy free safety they've lacked since Nick Collins. Three wide receivers and a tight end have been added to Aaron Rodgers' arsenal.

Minnesota Vikings- B+
For whatever reason, no NFL team thought to hire Mike Zimmer as their head coach until the Vikings hired him this past offseason. It's about damn time the man got a chance. In his first draft as head coach of the Vikings, he selected a very good bunch of guys. As a former defensive coordinator he added to his defense, selecting Anthony Barr and Scott Crichton, two players who should make an impact from day one. I was surprised they didn't draft a strong safety to compete with Jamarca Sanford, but maybe Antone Exum -- one of two defensive backs Minnesota selected in the sixth round -- will be tried at safety considering his size and experience playing multiple positions in college.

Draft Report Card: AFC West

AFC West:

Denver Broncos- B
I loved the Bradley Roby selection, they needed a cornerback and they got one of the best in the draft. Where I think John Elway and John Fox went wrong was drafting Cody Latimer. The team signed Emmanuel Sanders in the offseason, adding a quality wide receiver to make up for the loss of Eric Decker, so wide receiver wasn't a glaring need, unlike middle linebacker. The team has no clear-cut starter at middle linebacker, yet again. I think they should have used their second round pick to draft either Wisconsin's Chris Borland or Louisville's Preston Brown, respectively. Latimer is talented but I don't expect him to make the kind of immediate impact a guy like Borland would have made for them.

Kansas City Chiefs- C-
Despite Tamba Hali and Justin Houston firmly entrenched as the starting outside linebackers I expect first round pick Dee Ford to contribute from the get-go. I find the club's decision not to draft at least one receiver mindboggling, considering Dwayne Bowe and Donnie Avery are not an impressive duo.

Oakland Raiders- B+
General Manager Reggie McKenzie is moving this team in the right direction. The team drafted Khalil Mack in the first round and I think he's immediately the team's starting right defensive end. Derek Carr was drafted to be their quarterback of the future and should provide some solid competition for veteran Matt Schaub. I think they should have addressed the safety position prior to the seventh round, considering Charles Woodson will be 38-yearls old in October, but that doesn't take away from how well the Raiders drafted this year.

San Diego Chargers- B-
The team's first two draft selections-- cornerback Jason Verrett and outside linebacker Jeremiah Attaochu-- were great picks. Two positions of need were met with very talented prospects. I was surprised that they didn't choose to double dip at cornerback, and that they didn't draft a wide receiver to complement Keenan Allen.

Draft Report Cards: AFC South

AFC South:

Houston Texans- B
Houston's defense got a whole lot better, adding Jadeveon Clowney and Louis Nix to play alongside J.J. Watt. The offensive side of the ball improved as well, adding guard Xavier Su'a-Filo and tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz. Bill O'Brien chose to wait until the fourth round to draft a quarterback, selecting Tom Savage over more proven quarterback prospects like A.J. McCarron, Zach Mettenberger, and Aaron Murray.

Indianapolis Colts- C-
The Colts only had five draft picks and traded their first rounder to Cleveland last year for Trent Richardson. Jack Mewhort was an alright choice, but I'm not so sure how he'll fit at guard. Donte Moncrief was a good choice but overall, they could have made more out of their draft class.

Jacksonville Jaguars- A-
I'm telling you, Gus Bradley is turning this team around. There's something about defensive-minded head coaches. Anyways, he shocked the world when he chose Blake Bortles with the number three overall pick. And the best part about that selection was that they drafted talent to put around him, drafting wide receivers Marqise Lee and Allen Robinson. And, of course, Gus Bradley added good players to his defense, too.

Tennessee Titans- C+
On paper, the Titans now boast one of the league's best offensive lines after adding tackle Taylor Lewan. Ken Whisenhunt got great value in the sixth round with the selection of Zach Mettenberger. The decisions to draft Bishop Sankey instead of Carlos Hyde or Jeremy Hill and not to select a cornerback had significant impacts on this grade.

Draft Report Card: AFC East

AFC East:

Buffalo Bills- C
The Bills have a glaring need at tight end, and could have stayed put at number nine overall and drafted Eric Ebron. Instead, they chose to trade up to the Browns' number four spot and select wide receiver Sammy Watkins. Drafting Cyrus Kouandjio in the second round was a good pick. In the third round they chose Preston Brown, who looks like a two-down linebacker and they already have one of those in Brandon Spikes.
Miami Dolphins- C+
The Dolphins' staff knew they needed to add to offensive line, and that's what they did. Adding JaWuan James and Billy Turner. I don't understand the Arthur Lynch selection, considering he's not much of a receiving tight end and they already have Dion Sims as the in-line tight end. I also thought safety and running back should have been addressed.
New England Patriots- B
The first round selection of Dominique Easley was a good one. He's versatile, instinctive, and provides an interior pass-rush. The injury history is concerning, though. Their second round choice was a shocker, they selected quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. I think Belichick should have addressed the linebacker position, and I think he reached selecting running back James White in the fourth round. This draft class was clearly aimed at the future, rather than the 2014 season.
New York Jets- A-
The Jets killed it, plain and simple. They had a hell of a draft. Calvin Pryor and Jace Amaro are going to make an immediate impact. They addressed all of their needs. I thought they reached when selected Dexter McDougle in the third round. The selection of Tajh Boyd in the sixth round provides them with another dual-threat quarterback. Just a great job by Rex Ryan and his staff.

Draft Report Cards

With the draft behind us I think it's about time I grade each team's draft class. I grade each team based on whether or not they filled their needs, the players they drafted and whether that player was the best available at his respective position, and the draft day trade(s) they may have made. There will be a piece for each division. First up: the AFC North

Baltimore Ravens- A+
The Ravens' draft had me saying, "classic Ozzie Newsome." The man takes the best player available and has a keen eye not just for talent, but talent that fits with what his coaches want/need in a player. The defense looks much improved after adding C.J. Mosley, Timmy Jernigan, and Terrence Brooks with its first three picks and all their positional needs were addressed.

Cincinnati Bengals- C+
Darqueze Dennard and Jeremy Hill should make an instant impact. They didn't address the safety position, surprisingly, but the coaches might look to see if sixth round pick Marquis Flowers can make the transition from outside linebacker to strong safety, in attempts to find the next Kam Chancellor. Overall, I thought Cinci could have made some better choices.

Cleveland Browns- B+
The Browns were extremely active in the first round via trades. With only six total picks in the draft, the Cleveland brass made the most of what they had. Selecting Justin Gilbert to pair with Joe Haden, and Johnny Manziel to compete with Brian Hoyer for the starting quarterback job. Offensive lineman Joel Bitonio could end up starting at one of the guard spots, the team also added a versatile linebacker in Christian Kirksey, and running back Terrance West and cornerback Pierre Desir provide talent and depth. Why aren't they graded higher? Because, despite the news that standout wide receiver Josh Gordon is facing a one-year suspension, Cleveland didn't draft a wide receiver.

Pittsburgh Steelers- B-
Ryan Shazier is a lock start next to Lawrence Timmons in Dick LeBeu's defense. Stephon Tuitt is a classic prototype of a 3-4 end. However, I was bewildered by the organization's decision not to draft a cornerback until the fifth round, when they selected Shaquille Richardson. Cornerback was arguably their greatest position of need and thanks it remains so after the draft.

First Round Recap

I correctly predicted 28 of the 32 players drafted in the first round. There were a few very surprising selections: Jimmie Ward to San Francisco, Marcus Smith to Philadelphia and Dee Ford to Kansas City were the picks that I'd consider to be reaches. Here is a recap of the first round of the draft:

1. Houston Texans- Jadeveon Clowney, DE, South Carolina
J.J. Watt's will teach Clowney to be a professional. Work ethic and motivation won't be a problem with Watt around.
2. St. Louis Rams- Greg Robinson, OT, Auburn
He's immediately going to compete with Joe Barksdale for the starting right tackle job, but could also kick inside and play guard his rookie season. Great pick that will help keep Sam Bradford upright.
3. Jacksonville Jaguars- Blake Bortles, QB, Central Florida
They got their franchise quarterback. Arguably the best signal caller in the draft, this was a good pick and now they need to draft some weapons for him.
4. Buffalo Bills- Sammy Watkins, WR, Clemson
I still believe right tackle was a greater position of need, but clearly Buffalo wanted Watkins, whom they traded up to get. Watkins is the best receiver in the draft and provides quarterback E.J. Manuel with a legitimate number one wide out.
5. Oakland Raiders- Khalil Mack, OLB, Buffalo
Great pick by the Raiders. Playing in the same division as Peyton Manning, pressuring the quarterback is a top priority and Khalil Mack does it as well as any prospect.
6. Atlanta Falcons- Jake Matthews, OT, Texas A&M
It was either offensive tackle or pass-rusher. They went offensive tackle and selected arguably the best one in the draft. Matt Ryan is a very happy guy.
7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Mike Evans, WR, Texas A&M
It was clear the Bucs needed another wide receiver after they traded Mike Williams. Evans is going to pair with Vincent Jackson to form a towering duo much like the Chicago Bears have.
8. Cleveland Browns- Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma St.
The Browns front office new they could get their quarterback later, and chose to trade back. In doing so, they garnered another draft pick and also were able to draft the best cornerback prospect in Gilbert. He'll pair with Joe Haden to make a formidable cornerback tandem.
9. Minnesota Vikings- Anthony Barr, OLB, UCLA
The experts were saying that if Minnesota didn't draft a quarterback, they'd take the best available defensive player. And they did just that when they selected linebacker Anthony Barr. He's going to be a hell of a player for Mike Zimmer.
10. Detroit Lions- Eric Ebron, TE, North Carolina
With Gilbert off the board, providing Matthew Stafford with an elite receiving tight end gives him another weapon. Ebron could be the icing on the offense's cake.
11. Tennessee Titans- Taylor Lewan, OT, Michigan
Quarterback Jake Locker has trouble staying healthy, so what better way to keep him healthy than improve the offensive line? Lewan is a nasty, mean offensive lineman who will come in an compete for a starting job.
12. New York Giants- Odell Beckham Jr., WR, LSU
I thought Zack Martin would be the pick here, but losing Hakeem Nicks and Brandon Myers in free agency limited Eli Manning's arsenal, so Beckham made a lot of sense here. His impact will be immediate as he provides a homerun threat on both offense and special teams.
13. St. Louis Rams- Aaron Donald, DT, Pittsburgh
Donald joins a Rams defense that recorded 53 sacks in 2013.  And he will be plugged in to a defensive line that features Robert Quinn, Chris Long, and Michael Brockers. This is going to be a ferocious front seven.
14. Chicago Bears- Kyle Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech
With Aaron Donald off the board I thought Chicago might choose a safety. But since they signed a handful of veterans at the position, they made the wise choice addressing their lack of depth at cornerback.
15. Pittsburgh Steelers- Ryan Shazier, OLB, Ohio St.
I expected cornerback to be the choice here, but Shazier was a great pick. He's an aggressive, sideline-to-sideline linebacker who is going to be fit in well with the Steelers.
16. Dallas Cowboys- Zack Martin, OT, Notre Dame
Jerry Jones played it safe and smart. I'm shocked. Martin is a great selection and will be a starter for Dallas, whether it be at guard or tackle.
17. Baltimore Ravens- C.J. Mosley, ILB, Alabama
This pick has me wondering. Last year the Ravens selected linebacker Arthur Brown in the second round, selecting Mosley makes me think that Brown isn't progressing the way they'd hoped. Regardless, Mosley is an excellent linebacker who provides versatility and is a three down linebacker.
18. New York Jets- Calvin Pryor, SS, Louisville
With Odell Beckham unavailable, it was clear that Rex Ryan would be adding to his defense. The hard-hitting Pryor is going to be a welcomed addition to a very unimpressive secondary.
19. Miami Dolphins- JaWuan James, OT, Tennessee
Everyone knew the Dolphins would target the offensive line. James will come in and be their starting right tackle.
20. New Orleans Saints- Brandin Cooks, WR, Oregon St.
New Orleans traded up to draft Cooks. It was a good choice, giving Drew Brees another weapon that can play in the slot and still has the speed to burn defenses.
21. Green Bay Packers- Ha'Sean Clinton-Dix, FS, Alabama
I couldn't believe Clinton-Dix dropped this far. Green Bay got their guy.
22. Cleveland Browns- Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M
The Browns capped off an active first round by drafting who they hope ends up being their franchise quarterback.
23. Kansas City Chiefs- Dee Ford, DE, Auburn
I thought this might have been a bit of a reach. And considering the need for a receiver and the option available at that position, I was surprised by this pick. But, with Tamba Hali turning 31 this year it's not a bad idea to address the position.
24. Cincinnati Bengals- Darqueze Dennard, CB, Michigan St.
Dennard is an aggressive press-man corner who is a good fit for the Bengals defense. Cornerback was a position of need and Dennard will hopefully come in and make an immediate impact.
25. San Diego Chargers- Jason Verrett, CB, TCU
Some experts have been saying that Verrett might be the best cornerback prospect. He's certainly the best nickelback and will be assigned the task of covering Wes Welker at least twice a year. A great pick by the Chargers.
26. Philadelphia Eagles- Marcus Smith, DE/OLB, Louisville
The Eagles needed to address their pass-rush, but I think they reached for Marcus Smith. Then again, it's not a reach if they gave him a first round grade. He'll compete with Trent Cole for a starting job.
27. Arizona Cardinals- Deone Bucannon, SS, Washington St.
This was a great pick. I didn't think Bucannon would go in the first round, but when Arizona selected him it made perfect sense. Pairing him with Tyrann Mathieu; that's now one of the best young safety tandems in the league.
28. Carolina Panthers- Kelvin Benjamin, WR, Florida St.
Cam Newton is a very large man, listed at 6'5" and 245-pounds, and now he has the league's largest wide receiver in Kelvin Benjamin who's 6'5" and 240-pounds. Newton lost all his receivers in free agency, so Benjamin is a much needed addition as long as he can stay motivated and focused.
29. New England Patriots- Dominique Easley, DT, Florida
The defensive line needed to be addressed and Easley is a very good fit. He's suffered two ACL tears, so there's some risk involved. Still, he provides versatility, athleticism, and a much needed boost to the pass-rush.
30. San Francisco 49ers- Jimmie Ward, FS, Northern Illinois
I think Marqise Lee or Bradley Roby would have made a lot more sense with this pick. Ward projects more to a free safety but Eric Reid is firmly cemented at the position. Cornerback and wide receiver need to be addressed, but San Fran has a lot of draft picks and could make a trade or two on Day 2.
31. Denver Broncos- Bradley Roby, CB, Ohio St.
I'm not sure the Denver front office expected Roby to be available, but they need help at cornerback and he's too good to pass up. He's had some troubles off the field and struggles with consistency, but Denver has good leaders on their team and Roby has a chance to compete for the starting job opposite Aqib Talib.
32. Minnesota Vikings- Teddy Bridgewater, QB, Louisville
Minnesota traded their way back into the first round to get their franchise quarterback. Bridgewater joins an offense that boasts the league's best running back, a good offensive line, and some good receivers. He'll compete with veteran Matt Cassell for the starting job.

NFC Team Needs

And now, here are the needs of each team in the National Football Conference.

NFC North:
Bears- DT, S, OLB, CB
Chicago's defense is in dire need of a defensive tackle, Aaron Donald out of Pittsburgh is the most logical choice should he be available. Safety is also a position that could be targeted with their first round pick, Calvin Pryor being the best option.
Lions- CB, OT, S
Cornerback must be addressed, I think Detroit will select Justin Gilbert, the draft's top corner. Offensive tackle and safety could also use upgrades.
Packers- FS, TE, WR
Jermichael Finley is likely to sign elsewhere, making tight end a position of need for the Packers. Austin Seferian-Jenkins or Jace Amaro would fit well with Aaron Rodgers. Morgan Burnett needs another safety next to him, as well.
Vikings- QB, OLB, SS
New head coach Mike Zimmer is going to do good things in Minnesota, this I believe. First thing is first, they need a franchise quarterback. After that, linebacker and strong safety could use either upgrades or added depth.

NFC East:
Cowboys- DE, S, OLB, CB, WR
The Cowboys are a mess and, quite frankly, as long as Jerry Jones interferes with the football operations, this team won't win anything. They need to make up for the departures of defensive linemen Jason Hatcher and Demarcus Ware. A starting safety and outside linebacker are also needed.
Eagles- WR, CB, S, OLB
The Eagles greatly need to make improvements at the safety positions, but that can be addressed after the first round. The pass-rush definitely needs to be addressed, Kony Ealy would be a great weapon for Chip Kelly's defense -- think Dion Jordan at Oregon.
Giants- OT, TE, LB, WR
The Giants brought in a lot of free agents, particularly on defense. But I wouldn't be surprised if offensive tackle is the position they go with in the first round, Zack Martin out of Notre Dame will likely be the best available at No.12 overall. Tight end is also in serious need of improvement.
Washington- CB, OT, DL
Right tackle needs to be addressed, RGIII was hit too often last season (although he is to blame for a lot of those hits). Their secondary was atrocious, and cornerback will most certainly be a position targeted.

NFC South:
Buccaneers- WR, OLB, TE, CB
Lovie Smith got off to an impressive start as the Bucs' new head coach by hauling in a lot of free agents. Wide receiver Mike Williams was traded to Buffalo, and they need someone to start opposite Vince Jackson. Tight end and outside linebacker are also needed, and don't count out the possibility of a quarterback being selected with their first round pick.
Falcons- OLB, OT, RB, FS, CB
Pass-rusher or offensive tackle? They're equally needed. It depends on who is available and whether or not Atlanta is willing to trade up to No.1 to draft Jadeveon Clowney. If they remain at No.6 overall, I think the best potential fits available will be Taylor Lewan, Jake Matthews, and Anthony Barr.
Panthers- WR, OT, CB, OLB
Cam Newton needs help. The team's top three wide receivers last season (Steve Smith, Brandon LaFell, Ted Ginn) will all sport different uniforms in 2014. Wide receiver should be their number one priority come day one of the draft. And then upgrading the offensive line and adding talent at cornerback are in order.
Saints- OLB, C, OT, CB
Outside linebacker could be the position addressed in the first round, with Dee Ford, Marcus Smith, Jeremiah Attaochu and Trent Murphy the best potentially available fits late in the first round. After that, center is in serious need of an upgrade and left tackle needs more depth and competition.

NFC West:
49ers- CB, WR, NT
Tramaine Brock is the only starting-quality cornerback on the roster. Kapernick needs another weapon or two. A true nose tackle would do wonders; Louis Nix III, anyone?
Cardinals- OLB, SS, CB, QB
John Abraham can't play forever, so outside linebacker is in need of some young talent. A safety to pair with Tyrann Mathieu is in order. And the successor to Carson Palmer may be in this draft class.
Rams- OT, FS, CB, WR
Jake Long is the starting left tackle -- and a very good one, at that -- but right tackle could be the direction the Rams choose to go with the second overall pick in the draft. Greg Robinson would be a great pick. Free safety is also a position in need of improvement, Ha'Sean Clinton-Dix would be a perfect fit with the thirteenth overall pick. Cornerback will also be addressed.
Seahawks- G, WR, TE, DE
Xavier Su'a-Filo; if he's available when the 'Hawks select, they'll pull the trigger. I don't think that's going to happen, though, so wide receiver or tight end would be the next most logical positions to target. Kelvin Benjamin would be a great fit, filling a role that Sidney Rice never lived up to as a big-bodied, red zone threat for quarterback Russell Wilson.

AFC Team Needs

The 2014 NFL Draft is only a week away! The anticipation is almost too much to bare. Well, maybe it's just me. Anyways, with free agency basically off the grid until the draft is completed, I felt it was time to update each team's positional needs, starting with the AFC.

AFC North:
Bengals- OLB, CB, G, DE
James Harrison was a failed experiment, and with him out the door they still need an outside linebacker. I like Ryan Shazier to fill that void. But they may go cornerback considering their top guys are on the wrong side of 30.
Browns- QB, OL, RB, CB
The Browns need a quarterback, it's the same story every year. I think they'll select wide receiver Sammy Watkins with their first of two first round picks, and a quarterback with their second. An upgrade at guard is in order, other than that this team is in pretty good shape.
Ravens- OT, WR, SS, CB
As usual, GM Ozzie Newsome did a great job in free agency. Right tackle, wide receiver, and a safety to pair with Matt Elam are all more than worthy voids to fill with their first round pick. Calvin Pryor or Marqise Lee would be a solid fit.
Steelers- CB, OT, DT
It seems the Steelers are in need of quality offensive tackles every year. If Zack Martin or Taylor Lewan fall to the 15th overall pick, I expect the Steelers to take whichever is available. But I don't see that happening, so I think they'll bring in some youth to their secondary, Darqueze Dennard or Bradley Roby make the most sense.

AFC East:
Bills- TE, OT, ILB
The Bills have a talented roster, they're just very young, with subpar coaching, and play in the same division as New England. The one position that could most use an upgrade is tight end where Scott Chandler is the starter but a guy like Eric Ebron would surpass him with relative ease.
DolphinsOL, CB, RB
The Richie Incognito and Jonathan Martin "scandal" put the Dolphins offensive line in flux. Not that they were that good to begin with (gave up 58 sacks last season). Right tackle and/or guard are going to be targeted early in the draft.
Jets- WR, CB, OLB
Eric Decker was a good addition, but what good is he if he doesn't have help? Behind him the wide receivers are not impressive, but Rex Ryan needs a cornerback just as much if not more! It's a toss up, he could go in either direction, but I think wide receiver and specifically Odell Beckham, Jr.
Patriots- DE, TE, G/C, CB
The Patriots have no quality edge-rushers behind Chandler Jones and Rob Ninkovich, that has to be a point of emphasis in the draft. And since Gronkowski can't stay healthy, another tight end is in order. Also a versatile offensive lineman who can play both guard spots and center. Also, planning for a potential life without Revis after this season.

AFC South:
Colts- OL, SS, WR, CB
Andrew Luck needs better protection up front, and more receivers. A replacement for Antoine Bethea is also in order, along with depth at cornerback.
Jaguars- QB, WR, CB, OLB
Head coach Gus Bradley is a "defense first" kind of guy, but there's no doubt he'll target a quarterback in the draft -- Chad Henne is only a stop-gap solution. The depth is thin at corner and wide receiver.
Texans- QB, DE, ILB, CB, WR
The Texans suck, plain and simple. Their roster is low on quality talent aside from J.J. Watt, Arian Foster, and a few other players. They need a quarterback, but I think Clowney is the best option with their number one overall pick in the draft.
Titans- DE, RB, QB, CB, SS
Ken Wisenhunt is successful with quarterbacks, so it's possible he can turn Jake Locker's career around. But he'll probably draft a QB of his own. Running back is also a position in desperate need of an upgrade. Look for pass-rushers to be targeted by Tennessee in the draft.

AFC West:
Broncos- G, CB, ILB, WR
With Zane Beadles in Jacksonville, there's a huge void at left guard and Xavier Su'a-Filo is potential choice with their first round pick. Middle linebacker must be addressed and Chris Borland would be a great fit. Cornerback is also pretty thin.
ChargersCB, NT, OLB WR
San Diego will select a cornerback with their first round pick, this I'm almost sure of. Jason Verrett and Kyle Fuller may be the two best corners available at that point. If they don't select a corner, Louis Nix III would be a great choice capable being the starting nose tackle.
ChiefsOL, WR, DE, CB
The Chiefs need a star wide receiver to complement an inconsistent Dwayne Bowe, and there should be plenty of options with the 23rd overall pick. They're also in need of a dynamic tight end, added depth in the secondary and offensive line, and bring in competition at defensive end.
Raiders- QB, DE, FS, WR
The Raiders' new regime looks to be headed in the right direction, despite their below average free agency haul. They signed a handful of quality veteran free agents this offseason but have plenty of improvements to make. Matt Schaub isn't going to lead them to many wins, so drafting a quarterback will be important. Bringing youth to their pass-rush should be an area of focus, as Justin Tuck and LaMarr Woodley are the two starters at this point. Also, Charles
