Super Bowl 50

I predict a Super Bowl repeat this season: New England Patriots vs Seattle Seahawks. The birds out west made a big splash when they acquired Jimmy Graham in a trade with the Saints, but overall this team looks relatively the same as it did a year ago. I have no idea when/if Kam Chancellor's holdout will end, but if he continues to stand his ground and the Seahawks start slow out of the gate -- nobody is going to mistake Dion Bailey for Kam Chancellor -- I wouldn't be surprised to see the two sides reach a new deal. The offensive line is still an area of concern, Justin Britt was moved to right guard after a poor rookie season as the starting right tackle. Drew Nowak will (attempt) to replace former All-Pro Max Unger, who was dealt to New Orleans in return for Graham, at center. The receiving corps still lacks top-level talent, but Graham and an elite ground game cover up that flaw. Their will be challengers -- Green Bay and Philadelphia, specifically -- who are going to make it interesting. Had Jordy Nelson not suffered a season-ending knee injury, I may have chosen the Packers to represent the NFC. Yet, here we are.

Last season's Super Bowl champions, the New England Patriots, are returning to the big stage in 2016. Their going to play a different style and win games differently than they did a season ago. No longer can Belichick rely on Darrelle Revis to shut down the opponent's best receiver -- though, I do believe Malcolm Butler is going to do a hell of a job replacing him. Their hopes for repeating rest in large part on the shoulders of the defense's front seven. This is as talented a group as Belichick has put together in years and they're going to have to produce, or offenses will pick the secondary apart. I expect Chandler Jones to have a monster year and free agent acquisition Jabaal Sheard will prove to be one of the biggest steals of free agency. Rob Ninkovich is going to be as reliable as always, while Jamie Collins and Dont'a Hightower should have breakout seasons. On offense, Brady will be without Brandon LaFell for at least the first six games, so Danny Amendola and Aaron Dobson will have to step up in his absence. I don't expect the offensive line to start as slow as they did last season. Opposing defenses are going to have fits defending this unit in the red zone, as the tandem of Rob Gronkowski (6'6", 265-pounds) and newcomer Scott Chandler (6'7", 260-pounds) provide two very tall tasks. I expect one team to threaten New England's chances at reaching the Super Bowl: the Baltimore Ravens. They almost spoiled it for the Pats last season, and I expect them to try again 2016.

NFL Practice Squad Projections

With my league-wide 53-man roster projections complete, I'm going to turn my attention towards each team's practice squad. The practice squad, also known as the scout team, is a popular destination for late-round draft picks and undrafted rookie free-agents. It's also common to see highly athletic players with raw football skills be signed to the practice squad to develop their skills and potentially contribute in a season or two.

I find it important to note that teams are going to sign players to their respective practice squad who have been cut by other teams. However, because there will be hundreds of players released come late-August and all 32 teams looking to fill out their final roster and practice squads during that time, I choose to project the ten-man practice squads based on the players who are currently on each team's roster. For example, when I publish my piece on the Arizona Cardinals' potential practice squad roster, it will consist only of players who are currently on the team.

My process in deciding which players are likely destined for the practice squad is quite simple. I look at who was on each team's practice squad last season and the odds of those players making the leap to the 53-man roster this year, whether or not he's eligible for another year on the practice squad, and/or if he has enough upside to beat out his competition for a spot on either roster. Then I look at the late-round draft picks and undrafted rookie free-agent signings for each team -- What kind of numbers did they put up in college? Did they play in a tough conference/against elite competition? If they went to a small-college program, did they dominate their competition? What did the scouting reports say about these players? Who's currently listed ahead of them on the depth chart? What's the recent on-field buzz surrounding each team's rookies? Those are the kinds of questions that I answer with the help of websites such as Sports-Reference, Ourlads', NFL.com, and Bleacher Report. Thank you all for viewing my 53-Man Roster Projection series as well as my other posts!

Projected 53-Man Roster: Arizona Cardinals

With the draft behind us and the offseason well under way -- several teams have already placed player(s) on injured-reserve -- I've come with my annual roster projections for all 32 teams. I'm projecting each team's final roster -- a total of 53 players. I'll be releasing practice squad projections later this summer. I take many factors into consideration when I predict the fate of a team's roster, such as the history of each player (on and off the field); player contracts; coaching strategies/tendencies; player-to-scheme fit; positional depth, etc. I use Ourlads' to view every team's depth chart, which is always kept up to date and, personally, I find it to be the most reliable source on the web when it comes to NFL rosters and depth charts. Without further adieu, we start with a certain red-jersey team out west.

Another blunder by Roger Goodell and the NFL

In case you haven't heard, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced yesterday that New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has been suspended for the first four games of the 2015 regular season for "violating the league's policy on the integrity of the game," according to Gregg Rosenthall. Roger Goodell is the last person to be talking about anyone else integrity. The New England Patriots were also fined $1 million and forfeited their 2016 first-round draft choice and 2017 fourth-round draft choice.

These punishments are based off of the findings released last week by investigator Ted Wells, who Goodell hired to conduct the investigation behind deflate-gate, in which Wells said it was "more probable than not" that Brady was "at least generally aware" of the footballs being deflated. Brady also refused to hand over his cell phone so that investigators could search his texts and emails. So, in other words, Brady was not proven guilty, rather Goodell is playing off a hunch. The punishments handed down to the Patriots organization are totally unnecessary. The league stated that head coach Bill Belichick and the rest of the team's staff were unaware of any wrongdoing, so why are they being forced to forfeit draft picks? What makes the league's decision so appalling is that the punishment doesn't fit the crime. Remember, we're talking about a league that has suspended players who were charged with DUI manslaughter (Donte Stallworth and Josh Brent) for merely 16 games and 10 games, respectively. But, deflating some footballs results in a four games suspension? I would love to know the logic behind that reasoning. I'm not sure how Goodell still has his job as Commissioner, but hopefully he is forced to resign sooner rather than later. For a man who talks so much of integrity, he has very little himself. Practice what you preach, Goodell.

Updated Round 2 Mock draft

Okay, I lied in my last article when I said it would be my final 2015 mock draft. Can you blame me? I mean, who could have seen the first round playing out the way it did? Deflategate is a Non-Issue

As a New England Patriots fan my initial reaction to the controversy being dubbed "Deflategate" was one of disappointment (directed towards the team). However, I've come to realize the overabundance of news coverage surrounding the allegations made against the Patriots for using under-inflated footballs during the AFC Championship game -- in which they thrashed an inferior Indianapolis Colts team -- is laughable. As Patriots' Head Coach Bill Belichick explained during his press conference yesterday, if their footballs are inflated to the minimum amount required by the league, then any deflation sustained is going to cause the ball to become under-inflated. That's common sense at it's finest. But because of Belichick's history of bending/breaking rules (Spygate), this non-story has become a story. Both Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady publicly stated that not only are they not responsible for the under-inflated footballs, but also that they weren't aware of it. Whether that's true or not, we may never know. But we're hearing more and more about quarterbacks having preferences when it comes to the conditions of the balls; they need to have the right feel. According to Pro Football Talk, former NFL quarterback Brad Johnson paid to have 37 footballs he was going to use in Super Bowl XXXVII altered to provide a better grip.

The fact of the matter is that the state of the footballs used in last week's AFC Championship game had zero impact on its outcome. Numerous reports were released earlier this week claiming the league stated that the Patriots' footballs were checked and re-inflated at halftime and were checked again after the game. If that's true, then in the second half -- when the Patriots outscored the Colts 28-0 -- was evidence that the Patriots were going to win that game regardless of the balls being used. The opinions of former players such as Shannon Sharpe and Troy Aikman, saying that the league should hand down punishments to the Patriots similar of those given to the Saints after the Bountygate scandal, are simply idiotic. Intent to injure opposing players is far worse than playing with a deflated football, the two aren't even comparable. In my opinion the league should fine the team, but there should be no suspensions nor loss of draft picks. The truth is that the Spygate scandal in 2007, along with the success sustained by this team over the past 14 years, is the reason that the reactions to these allegations have been so overblown. You can guarantee Bill Belichick will use this as a source of motivation for his players leading up to Super Bowl XLIX, though -- that's what great coaches do, and Belichick may be the greatest.
