NFL reaches settlement with Former Players in Concussion Litigation

The battle that has been going on between former players and the National Football League has reached its conclusion -- once the judge's approval is received. The two sides reached a 765 million dollar settlement today, as reported by NFL.com, which will fund medical exams, concussion-related compensation, and medical research. Considering the league's worth, I'm sure there are many people out there who would consider this to be a bargain for the NFL. I sure hope the ex-players got as much as they could, because this was an important lawsuit. Guys who played for years and years and suffered countless concussions weren't receiving any help in their life after football. That's changed, now. And, hopefully, we won't see any more tragedies like that of the late Junior Seau, Ray Eastering, and Dave Duerson. I think this settlement is a step in the right direction.

If my roster projections have created any confusion, READ THIS

I just wanted to remind everybody who has read any of my final roster projections for all 32 teams that I'm updating them daily- or, at least trying to update some of them daily. At the bottom of each article, I've placed recent transactions under the "UPDATES" label. And to rid you of any confusion, when a player is listed as "out" I'm referring to their place on the active 53 man roster and next to each player's name is the reason why in parenthesis. For example, a player who has been placed on season ending injured reserve would read: "Player Name (IR)," and if there are not parenthesis next to their name it's because I'm predicting that player won't make the final roster cuts. And in many of my projections, you may be wondering why there are more players under the "In" category than the "Out" category, or vise versa. The reason is that the players who have been placed on the physically unable to peform (PUP) list and the players who will begin the regular season serving a suspension do not count against their team's 53 man roster. In other words, until those players can return, another player will make the roster. And once those players due return, there will be one or more players who will be released to make the necessary room on the roster. I hope I was clear in what I said, I realize it can get a bit confusing. If you have any questions or want to chime in on anything I have to say, don't hesitate to comment. Thanks, everybody.

Each Team's 2013 Breakout Player: NFC West

49ers: Ian Williams- Williams signed with San Fran after going undrafted in 2011. He's played in only three games over his first two years in the league but with departures of Isaac Sopoaga and Ricky Jean-Francois, the nose tackle position is up for grabs and Ian Williams is the team's best option, in my opinion. As a Fighting Irish fan, I watched Williams during his time at the University of Notre Dame and he's a run stuffer. He won't get much pressure on the quarterback but he'll clog up running lanes and take up blockers. I expect him to breakout and thrive as the starting nose tackle in 2013.
Other candidates: LaMichael James and Tarell Brown
Cardinals: Michael Floyd- After the Cardinals drafted him 13th overall in 2012, Arizona fans had high hopes for the former Notre Dame star. However, due to the inconsistent -- to say the least -- play at the quarterback position, it was hard for any of the team's receivers to put up numbers. But with big-armed Carson Palmer at the helm and the additions to backfield and offensive line, I expect Floyd to breakout in his sophomore season. He's got the size (6'3", 220lbs.) and skills to be a great player and with the double coverage that Larry Fitzgerald draws, Floyd should see plenty of one-on-one balls where he has the upper hand.
Other candidates: Rob Housler, Ryan Williams, and Jerraud Powers
Rams: Chris Givens- Givens had a productive rookie season catching 42 balls for 698 yards and three touchdowns. He has blazing speed and can take the top off a defense; he is the offense's deep threat. He's already showcased that this preseason catching four passes for a whopping 139 yards. That's a sample of things to come.
Other candidates: Michael Brockers, Daryl Richardson, and Sam Bradford
Seahawks: Golden Tate- With Percy Harvin lost for possibly the entire 2013 season, Golden Tate has a chance to become quarterback Russell Wilson's go-to-guy. Tate isn't big -- listed at 5'10", 202lbs. -- but he has terrific athleticism, versatility, and ability to make plays with the ball in his hands; much like Harvin. He had a good season a year ago when he caught 45 passes for 688 yards and seven touchdowns, all career highs. He needs to be more consistent but the door is wide open for him to become Seattle's top wide receiver, and I expect him to have a hell of a season.
Other candidates: Zach Miller, Doug Baldwin, and K.J. Wright

Each Team's 2013 Breakout Player: NFC South

Buccaneers: Mark Barron- The Buccaneers' secondary has significantly improved -- on paper, at least -- from a year ago with the additions of veterans Darrell Revis and Dashon Goldson and rookie Johnthann Banks. And I expect Barron in particular to show significant improvement in his second season; with Revis shutting down the opponent's top receiver Barron will have a lot more opportunities to make plays in every facet of the game.
Other candidates: Adrian Clayborn, Lavonte David, Gerald McCoy, and Leonard Johnson
Falcons: Jonathan Massaquoi- The Falcons cut John Abraham in the offseason and essentially replaced him with Osi Umenyiora. The Atlanta defense recorded only 30 sacks in 2012 and they need to increase that number this year. This means seeing much improvement from second year man Jonathan Massaquoi. He did little in his rookie season but I expect him to breakout in rotational role in 2013.
Other candidates: Cliff Matthews and Robert McClain
Panthers: Greg Hardy- In 2012 Hardy amassed a career-high 11 sacks. This season marks the final year in his rookie contract, meaning he'll play his ass off in 2013 to get that big pay day in free agency next year. Also, the Panthers added to their defensive line by selecting Star Lotulelei and Kawann Short in this year's draft. Expect Hardy to really breakout in 2013 and improve his sack total from a year ago.
Other candidates: Brandon LaFell, Luke Kuechly, and Josh Norman
Saints: Nick Toon- After missing his entire rookie season with a foot injury, Toon is finally healthy and ready to roll. Currently listed as the No.3 wide receiver on the depth chart, Toon is one of many weapons at quarterback Drew Brees's disposal. He's a big target (6'2", 215lbs.) and, according to rantsports.com, his quarterback recently compared him to three-time All Pro wide out Vincent Jackson. I expect Toon to emerge in the Saints' aerial attack and breakout in this year.
Other candidates: Mark Ingram, Cameron Jordan, Akiem Hicks, and Junior Galette

Each Team's 2013 Breakout Player: NFC East

Cowboys: Morris Claiborne- Claiborne should benefit from the implementation of new defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin's Tampa 2 defense. He should be able to better utilize his coverage skills and be in position to make more plays on the ball in his second season.
Other candidates: Bruce Carter, Kyle Wilber, and James Hanna
Eagles: Mychal Kendricks- After an up and down rookie season, Kendricks makes the move from 4-3 outside linebacker to 3-4 inside linebacker; a position he should thrive in. At 5'11" and 239 lbs. Kendricks is considered undersized for a linebacker but his talent is undeniable. He's very good in pass coverage and knifes through blockers in the run game. The Eagles' defense was atrocious in 2012 and while the transition to a 3-4 may take some time, Kendricks should emerge as a bright spot.
Other candidates: Brandon Graham and Fletcher Cox
Giants: David Wilson- After fumbling on his second professional carry, Wilson was put in head coach Tom Coughlin's doghouse. It wasn't until Week 14 -- 327 total yards and three touchdowns -- that he displayed the talent that got him drafted in the first round. When the Giants chose not to re-sign Ahmad Bradshaw this offseason, it showed their confidence in Wilson. However, he needs to prove capable in pass protection and ability to hold on to the ball or Andre Brown will steal some quality snaps.
Other candidates: Rueben Randle, Mark Herzlich, and Prince Amukamara
Redskins: Ryan Kerrigan- After an impressive 2011 rookie season -- 41 tackles, 7.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, and one interception which he returned for a touchdown -- he improved in his sophomore season by recording 42 tackles, 8.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and one interception returned for a touchdown. That may not appear to be much of an improvement, but when you consider that he put up those numbers without pro bowl outside linebacker Brian Orakpo for nearly the entire season, you see how impressive his season was. With Orakpo's return, I see Kerrigan breaking out in 2013.
Other candidates: Pierre Garcon and Leonard Hankerson

Chiefs and 49ers exchange former first round picks

www.nfl.com reported earlier today that the San Francisco 49ers traded 2012 first round pick, wide receiver A.J. Jenkins to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for their 2011 first round pick, wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin. It's not too often we see player for player trades in the NFL, let alone two former first round draft picks. Both of these players have the "bust" label attached to their names, having failed to live up to their draft selection. Jenkins fell completely out of favor in San Fran, as he continued to struggle and was showing no signs of improvement. Baldwin was a bust for K.C. and despite his physical abilities and starting across from a talented receiver in Dwayne Bowe, he never produced. I think we will see one -- if not -- both, of these players benefit from this change of scenery. The expectations and criticism that Jenkins and Baldwin received from their former teams are no more; it's a fresh start. Both players are young (24 years old) and have the physical requirements, but they both need to work on route running, understanding the offense, and catching the ball consistently, and there's likely several other aspects of their game that the coaches will help them improve on. All parties involved have benefited from this trade, especially the players.

Von Miller suspended?

We've heard about the potential suspension to Broncos stud linebacker Von Miller and according to ESPN's Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen, it appears likely that Miller will miss at least the first six games of 2013. This is a huge blow to the Broncos defense. Miller enters his third season as the best 4-3 outside linebacker in the league, in my opinion. Over his first two seasons he's recorded 30 sacks, 106 tackles, forced nine fumbles, and intercepted one pass which he returned for a touchdown. He's the key to Denver's front seven and an irreplaceable talent. Replacing Miller isn't a one man job, the defense as a whole will need to step up their game. Expect some struggles for Denver's defense in the early goings of the regular season.

UPDATE: It's been confirmed, Miller will miss the first 6 games of the regular season. And, if he violates the league's drug policy again, would face a one year suspension.

Each Team's 2013 Breakout Player: NFC North

Bears: Alshon Jeffery- After being drafted in the second round last year, Jeffery was expected to pair with Brandon Marshall as a forceful wide receiver duo. He only played in ten games due to injury and caught 24 passes for 367 yards and three touchdowns. He has great size (6'3", 216 lbs.) and potential. And with Cutler playing behind a more improved offensive line he'll have more time to throw and I expect Jeffery to step up in his sophomore season.
Other candidates: Jay Cutler and Shea McClellin
Lions: Nick Fairley- Fairley has so much potential but he's yet to reach it. He pairs with Ndamukong Suh to form arguably the best defensive tackle duo in the league. Fairley has deceptive quickness and athleticism for his size. Several reports from Lions camp say he's in the best shape of his young career. Fairley has all the skills to be a force and now that he appears to have his sights set on stepping up his game, I expect him to have a breakout year.
Other candidates: Ryan Broyles and Willie Young
Packers: Randall Cobb- Yes, Cobb had a really good season in 2012 and one could argue he's already had his breakout year. I beg to differ. Aaron Rodgers has said that Cobb is going to be a huge part of the offense and when you consider how versatile he is and the departure of Greg Jennings in free agency, it's easy to see him increasing his production in 2013.
Other candidates: Nick Perry and Jermichael Finley
Vikings: Erin Henderson- Entering his sixth season, Henderson is making the transition from outside linebacker to middle linebacker and, according to reports, he's doing so with flying colors. The Vikings signed Desmond Bishop to a one year deal in the offseason but it looks like Henderson has the starting middle linebacker role locked up. I expect him to produce significantly in 2013.
Other candidates: Jarius Wright, Everson Griffen, and Josh Robinson

Each Team's 2013 Breakout Player: AFC West

Broncos: Ronnie Hillman- Even though the Broncos drafted Montee Ball in the second round this year, I think Denver will use both he and Ronnie Hillman in a running back by committee approach. Ball is a north-south, between the tackles type of back. Hillman is smaller and quicker and is more adept in pass protection. The heavy increase in touches in his second year spells "breakout" for Hillman.
Other candidates: Chris Harris, Rahim Moore, and Julius Thomas
Chargers: Kendall Reyes- Selected in the second round last year, Reyes was impressive in his rookie season. He played in all 16 games, starting four of them. He recorded 17 tackles and 5.5 sacks. He'll be a full time starter in in 2013 and by the end of the season, should be considered one of the best young defensive ends in the league.
Other candidates: Ryan Mathews and Vincent Brown
Chiefs: Dexter McCluster- With offensive minded Andy Reid in his first season as Chiefs head coach, I expect McCluster to benefit greatly. He's very versatile and can make plays when he gets the ball. Reid as already made it known that he has big plans for McCluster this year.
Other candidates: Justin Houston, Jonathan Baldwin, and Dontari Poe
Raiders: Rod Streater- After going undrafted last year, Streater signed with the Raiders and was one of the most productive rookie wide receivers of the year. He was a rare bright spot on a lousy Raiders team. Heading into his second season, Streater looks primed to start opposite Denarius Moore, and with consistent quarterback play, put up big numbers.
Other candidates: Lamarr Houston, Marcel Reece, Matt Flynn, Nick Roach, and Usama Young

Each Team's 2013 Breakout Player: AFC South

Colts: Coby Fleener- Fleener had a disappointing rookie season, especially considering the player the Colts drafted after Fleener -- tight end Dwayne Allen -- had a far better rookie season. Now, with Andrew Luck and Fleener reunited with their offensive coordinator at Stanford Pep Hamilton, big things could be on the horizon. If Fleener can stay healthy, I expect him to emerge as a serious weapon in 2013.
Other candidates: Greg Toler, Jerrell Freeman, and Darrius Heyward-Bey
Jaguars: Jason Babin- Yes, he's 33 years old and is on the back end of his career. However, Babin is in an ideal position under new coach Gus Bradley. He'll play the "leo" in the Jaguars 4-3 front, where he won't have any coverage responsibilities. Instead he can do what he does best; get to the quarterback.
Other candidates: Andre Branch, Chad Henne, and Tyson Alualu
Texans: Whitney Mercilus- Houston's 2012 first round pick didn't get a ton of time on the field but he was solid rushing the passer (six sacks). Mercilus replaces Connor Barwin who signed with Philadelphia in the offseason. That's a huge upgrade in terms of pass rush ability. Expect Mercilus to improve in his sophomore season and help teammate J.J. Watt wreak havoc on opposing quarterbacks.
Other candidates: Brooks Reed and Ben Tate
Titans: Kendall Wright- Wright had a productive rookie season in 2012 putting up a stat line of 64-626-4. He proved to be a reliable target and was consistent throughout the season. The Titans have a lot of depth at wide receiver and Wright is currently third on the depth chart. But, with Kenny Britt's history of injuries and off-field issues and rookie Justin Hunter struggling, I expect Wright to have break out year.
Other candidates: Jake Locker, Delanie Walker, Mike Martin, and Akeem Ayers

Each Team's 2013 Breakout Player: AFC East

Bills: Stephon Gilmore- Drafted No.10 overall in 2012, Gilmore -- like most rookies -- had an up and down first year in the league. He's a very skilled cover corner and he should only continue to get better. The Bills switched to a 3-4 defensive front this offseason and it could result in more pressure on opposing quarterbacks, giving the likes of Gilmore more opportunities to make plays.
Other candidates: Nigel Bradham, Mario Williams, and Jerry Hughes
Dolphins: Lamar Miller- Miami chose not to re-sign Reggie Bush in the offseason because they were confident in the running backs on their roster; specifically Lamar Miller. Entering his second season, the starting running back role is Miller's to lose. He has good size (5'11" 212lbs) and was impressive in his rookie season. Reports indicate he's had a good offseason and is ready to shoulder the load. Expect some big things from this guy.
Other candidates: Olivier Vernon and Jared Odrick
Jets: Chris Ivory- After spending his first three seasons in New Orleans where he stuck behind several running backs on the depth chart, Ivory was traded to Jets during this year's draft. The 6'0", 222-pounder is a bruising back with surprising speed. He's only carried the ball just 256 times in his career and when he was given the chance to play, he impressed. Jets coach Rex Ryan will likely go back to a ground-and-pound style offense where Ivory will thrive.
Other candidates: Stephen Hill, Jeff Cumberland, Quionton Coples, and Demario Davis
Patriots: Shane Vereen- With Danny Woodhead a member of the Chargers, Vereen is now the Patriots third down and change of pace back. There will be no drop off in production, if anything, Vereen will be more productive than Woodhead was. He is a quick and decisive runner and a very polished receiver. I expect Vereen to have a terrific sophomore campaign.
Other candidates: Chandler Jones, Danny Amendola, Marcus Cannon, and Donta Hightower

Which player on your favorite team can you expect to breakout in 2013?: AFC North

Every season we see players who, until that point, had yet to make a significant impact on the field in terms of production -- whether it be due to injury, underachieving, being buried on the depth chart, etc. -- and then finally burst onto the scene. I'm going to list one player on each team whom I expect to have a breakout season in 2013. I'm going to go by division; starting with the AFC North.

Bengals: Mohamed Sanu- After being picked in the 3rd round last year, Sanu played in only 8 games due to a foot injury that prematurely ended his rookie season. He's a solid possession receiver and showed good versatility (threw a TD pass). The No.2 receiver spot opposite A.J. Green is an open competition and I expect Sanu to win it.
Other candidates: Dre Kirkpatrick, Marvin Jones, and Orson Charles
Browns: Jordan Cameron- A big bodied and athletic tight end, Cameron enters his third year in the league in an ideal situation: he is the starting tight end, for now. He has the highest ceiling and most skill among the tight ends on the roster. He should see plenty of action this year.
Other candidates: Trent Richardson, Buster Skrine, and Travis Benjamin
Ravens: Tandon Doss- The Ravens need someone to step up at the wide receiver position. Jacoby Jones isn't capable of being a full time wide out, leaving the starting spot opposite Torrey Smith vacant. Doss is in his third year and has a chance to play a significant role in the offense in 2013.
Other candidates: Arthur Jones, Jimmy Smith, and Courtney Upshaw
Steelers: Emmanuel Sanders- After almost becoming a New England Patriot this past offseason, Sanders is going to be a key part of the Steelers passing game in 2013. With Mike Wallace in Miami, Sanders finds himself in a starting role with little competition behind him. He had a career year last season and I expect the fourth year vet --with the help of fellow wide out Antonio Brown -- to make Wallace an afterthought in Pittsburgh.
Other candidates: Cortez Allen, Will Johnson, and Jason Worilds

The NFL is back! In more ways than one

The first preseason game of 2013 took place two days ago, marking the return of the NFL. But, one story marks the return of a different NFL; the No Fun League. According to Pro Football Talk's Michael Smith, officials in Panthers and Vikings training camps have warned players that they'll be penalized if they taunt opponents by spinning the ball. This is not a new rule: The 2012 official playing rules listed examples of prohibited acts that will result in unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, saying, “These acts include but are not limited to: sack dances; home run swing; incredible hulk; spiking the ball; throwing or shoving the ball; pointing; pointing the ball; verbal taunting; military salute; standing over an opponent (prolonged and with provocation; or dancing).”

In my opinion, if a player scores a touchdown and spins the ball on the ground once they've reached the end zone, that shouldn't be considered taunting. Now, let's say a receiver makes a great catch over the back of a helpless defender and then gets in the face of that defender and throws the ball at him, it would be fair to penalize that player for taunting/unsportsmanlike conduct. I agreed with the rules that got rid of the excessive celebrations for which the likes of Chad Johnson, Terrell Owens, and Steve Smith became famous or infamous (depending on your view on celebrations). But, penalizing players for spiking the ball, giving a military salute or a home run swing? That's just plain silly. We're talking about grown men who play a game for a living, there should be fun involved when they're on the field. While we all love that the National Football League is back in full swing, I -at the very least- roll my eyes and shake my head at the return of the No Fun League.
